Lisbon is the city that takes the nightlife seriously. At night it turns into a swirling mix of cultures and styles. Traditionally, Bairro Alto is a major entertainment district, hosting fado clubs, canteen-style bars and upscale discos. The bars are often open to 4 am. In the recent years Docas (the Docks) sprang up as a new nightlife hub, with warehouses converted into en vogue clubs. Doca de Santo Amaro area hosts a sequence of bars. Extravagant CeltasIberosIrishBar is one of the most popular. ClubedaEsquina in a smart minimalist style is frequented by local cool crowd. Portas Largas is probably less pretentious, but more charming. DiVino features excellent wine cellar and live music, the InstitutodoVinhodoPorto claims to offer over 300 diffrerent varieties of port.

Doca de Alcantara is a newly-emerged trendy spot. Plateau with its confetti-coloured décor attracts elite as well as young easy-going folks, Kremlin plays techno in Egyptian-style surroundings, Kapital has three floors, each with a different style. The ultra stylish and chic Lux is a funky mega-club, partly owned by a Hollywood celebrity John Malkovich and often scored as the best club in Europe. Cinqo Lounge is the city's smartest club with most inventive and budget-breaking specialty cocktails and hottest DJ hits.

There are many live music venues, from small and hip ("Side")  to posh ones, as "Pavilhao Chines". The city's distinctive brand is so-called fado singing. The name originates from the Portuguese word which means "fate" or "destiny". The main slant is the nostalgia for something, which has gone but can return in a distant future. This is reflected in music and lyrics, being something between blues and flamenco.

Fado has many regional variations, for example, in Caribbean basin and Cabo Verde. This traditional music is performed in numerous casa de fado, from 9 to 10 pm. Among the recommended venues AdegaMachado, AdegaMesquita, ASevera, ClubedeFado.
