Lisbon Zoo (Jardim Zoologico de Lisboa) boasts one of the best collections in the world. More than 2000 animals of 400 species are accommodated in areas similar to their natural conditions. During 120 tears of its existence the zoo developed in a major centre on research, preservation and reproduction of the threatened species.

Right opposite the entrance is Animax, the most recent attraction, a huge multimedia complex. The zoo has a cable car, which carries visitors over the animal habitats. The trip lasts about half an hour on the route, projected to reflect the four continents. The highlights include impressive apes and lions, wolves and bears. The highest point of the route also has a great city view.

The Reptile House is a huge terrarium, recreating almost identical tropical ecosystem, inhabited with the most fearsome snakes and cobras. A pane of glass keeps them on safe, though close distance. The tarantulas and other dangerous insects are also featured.

The children will want to see a hippopotamus cub and two little elephants, which dwell in huge territory with artificial lake, where they spend much time in the water. There is also a theme park, resembling a small wood, dedicated to indigenous Iberian fauna, with foxes, wolves and bears. The bears used to roam freely in the mountains even in the last century.

Another attraction of the kind is the Oceanarium of Lisbon (Oceanario de Lisboa), a great aquarium located in Parque das Nacoes, which was exhibition grounds for Expo 98. The building is constructed in the pier of internal sea, resembling an aircraft in planning.

It is one of the largest aquariums in the world, hosting many species of sea birds, mammals, fishes and other marine creatures. Four smaller aquaria represent a particular ocean - the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Indian and the Antarctic. A large central tank exhibits the species from the open ocean.
