Lisbon was not always the capital of Portugal. There were not always chic Lisbon hotels with the light rooms of a high comfort and rich views over the city, green parks and wonderful buildings. Between 1580 and 1640, Portugal came under Spanish rule, but then again became independent. In 1755 Lisbon was almost completely destroyed by the strongest earthquake, tsunami and fire, but rebuilt according the plan of Marquis Pombal.
