Lisbon airport

Lisbon Airport, known as Aeroporto da Portela or Aeroporto da Prtela de Sacavem, is located inside the city, but it owes its name to the neighbouring municipal community of Portela de Sacavem. It is the main gateway to Portugal and one of the biggest Southern European airports, and the major hub for Portuguese airlines such as TAP Portugal and Portugalia. The airport is operated by state-owned company Aeroportos de Portugal.

Portela Airport was founded in 1942. During World War II it served as a neutral aerial hub for both British and German air forces. At that time it had four 1,000 m runways. It quickly expanded, with more runway and new terminal. By 2006, the airport handled more than 12 million passengers.

With the growth of the city infrastructure it became completely surrounded by urban developments, which aroused debate about whether it should be relocated. In 2006 Ota, 50 km north of the city, was chosen as a place for new airport. It is scheduled to be finished in 2017.

However, the company, which operates it, ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal is elaborating plans for the expansion of the airport in order to manage growing passenger and cargo traffic. The construction should have been finished by 2010. The plan implies the expansion of existing terminal and building of new one, capable of handling large-size aircrafts.

Airport has a vast parking space. Besides, it is linked with the city by Aerobus, running each 20 minutes from 7 am to 9 pm, and a number of bus lines.
