Car rental is a good idea, for though public transport in the city is good, its vast suburbs are best explored by car. It is indispensable for traveling to beaches and fishing villages as well as minor historical attractions and ancient cities, scattered in the vicinity.

The minimum driving age is 17 years. The EC format pink/green license is acceptable, the old-style green or non-European license must be accompanied with an International Driving Permit. U.S. residents can use U.S. driving license up to six months.

Seat belts are compulsory for front passengers outside the city. Children must be at least 12 years of age to sit in the front seat. Safety seats for small children are mandatory. Speed limits on expressways are 120 km/h, outside the city 90 km/h, in the city 50 km/h.  

The person, who hires the car, must be at least 21 year of age, any additional driver must be registered and given permission. Some companies require surcharge, some do not. Medium or full-sized car is advisable, air conditioning is essential, especially in summer and away from the coastal areas.
