Beaches

Lisbon is the only European capital, which enjoys close proximity to excellent sandy beaches. Most of them are very clean and have European Blue Flag for excellence. The city residents head to the beaches every time they can, so the beaches are never empty. Even in winter people stroll along or merely gaze at the sea.

The main beaches are located along the railway line from Lisbon to Cascais. There are many of them, offering a generous choice, probably the most popular is Carcavelos Beach, always full of people. There are some others within 20 minutes of reach, Sao Pedro do Estoril is the most spectacular.

Praia da Adraga is located close to Sintra, 15 km from Guincho. The beach was rated by BBC among the best in Europe. The beach is surrounded by picturesque tall cliffs. Costa da Caparica stretches approximately 30 km south along the south bank of the river Tagus. It is packed with restaurants, cafes and clubs, open until very late.

Ericeira is a lovely village 54 km of Lisbon. It is connected with the city by bus from Campo Grande. Ribeira das Ilhas, one of the most beautiful villages, since 1985 hosting World Surfing Championship and rated as one of the best surfing spots.

Very spectacular Guincho Beach is perfectly suitable for surfing and windsurfing, although not best for swimming due to powerful waves and wind. Lagoa de Albufeira is favourable for swimming because of calm clear waters. It is surrounded by pine forests and is pleasant for long strolls even during cool seasons.

Another charming serene beach with clear waters is Portinho de Arrabida, excellent for swimming and diving. Beautiful Coelhos Beach with golden sand is in the vicinity. Unfortunately, it is not served by public transport, so the tourists will need their own car to get there.

Praia Grande is one of the safest beaches, perfect for swimming. It is located near Sintra and easily accessible by train. The beach has several restaurants and bars and often hosts surfing competitions. Tamariz Beach is a fashionable place packed with tourists and lined with bars and cafes. It is easily reached by trains from Cais de Sodre to Cascais. The beach is overlooked by castle belonging to royal family of Monaco.
