Lisboa 葡萄牙 Public transport

Public transport

Lisbon boasts reliable and well-developed public transport network. The main transportation means is metro, covering vast part of the city. It was opened in 1955 and since then extended greatly to cover the city's growing suburbs. The Metro has four lines, reaching major railway stations and the airport - Yellow (linha Amarela), Green (linha Verde), Red (linha Vermelha) and Blue (linha Azul).

The Red line is currently being prolonged to São Sebastião via Saldanha station. The completion of the project will allow reaching any station without making change more than once. There is also a project of connecting the Blue line with Santa Apolonia Railway Station.

The city planning does not allow light rail, and another traditional public transport in Lisbon is tram. First trams were imported in 19th century from USA and since then called americanos. The charming 1930s trams are used as a tourist attraction, running on a special short line.

The city is connected with its vast suburbs by numerous motorways. There exist many commuter bus services, operated by Vimeca, Rodoviaria de Lisboa, Transportes sul do Tejo, Boa Viagem, Barraquiero. They arrive and depart mainly to the different rail terminals.

There are four local trains departing from the city: Cascais, Sintra, azambuja and Setubal, the last crossing the river Tagus over 25 de Abriil Bridge. The Vasco da Gama Bridge, inaugurated in 1998, is the longest bridge in Europe.

The river can be crossed by ferry. Transtejo and Soflusa companies operate ferry services to the different points of the city. The city is also famous for its funiculars, which are among the greatest attractions. There are three of them, Elevador da Glória, Elevador da Bica, and Elevador da Lavra.
